About The Region

Geography
The Island Region is made up of islands in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It includes the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina, as well as islands such as Malpelo and Gorgona. These islands are of volcanic or coral origin, with a tropical climate and great biodiversity. San Andrés is approximately 700 km from the mainland, giving it a strategic location both geographically and ecologically and politically.
The Governor
The governor of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina was Nicolás Gallardo, elected for the 2024-2027 term. However, in April 2025, the Council of State annulled his election because he supported candidates from other parties while with the Liberal Party, which is prohibited. The position of governor is now vacant.

Dialect
In the Insular Region, which includes San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina, two types of dialects are spoken: San Andrés Creole and Insular Spanish. Creole, which is English-based with influences from Spanish and African languages, is the native language of the Raizal people and is used in informal settings. Spanish, with influences from Creole and English, is spoken in formal settings such as school and government.

Fauna and Flora
Colombia's Insular Region boasts a rich biodiversity, with tropical forests, mangroves, and vegetation adapted to sandy soils. Its fauna includes Caribbean birds, reptiles, sea turtles, dolphins, and tropical fish. Unique species include the San Andrés parrot and Pacific island sharks.
